Real Madrid Soccer solutions
All my experiences in infy and inspirations from the
Dilbert series have inspired me to write this blog.
Woke up late in the morning after a watching a good
win by real madrid over a hopeless levante team. Went
to morning to attend a class of Information technology
and ERP. Could not help laughing thinking about those
days in infy and how much fun it was to work in a
place like that. On top of that a friend from a rival
company TCS comes online and we start talking about
the match. Soon the topic on the gtalk became what
makes a soccer great and consistent and we instantly
came up with the solution that it shud be
professionally managed more like a company and not
just a sports club. A few minutes after logging out I
realised how wrong my thoughts were and could not help
laughing at the very thought what if infy/TCS or any
other software company had run a football club (My fav
club being the Real Madrid). A brief description of
how things would have looked:
we would win 10 matches after playing more than 100.
The results will show only the victories and targets
of the next year.
The team would have ten captains and one player and
during the game all the captains will give
instructions to taht one player on where to go and
what to do.
The one player would have trained to be a defender but
due to "urgent business requirements" on a match day
he will be made the striker.
Each player would have to fill out a time sheet after
every game describing the time he spent passing and
chasing the ball.
After every team practice one person will write the
minutes of the meeting.
All team practice would involve 40% playing soccer and
60% on documenting what they did. A CMM level 5
practice.
During free time players will have to take
"initiative" and take training sessions in Cricket,
hockey etc and implement the "Best practices" in
soccer.
Soon that one player will put his papers and the coach
will be promoted to higher level. A new coach will be
appointed as lateral from another Basketball club with
atleast 10 years experience.
Now a look at the pay packages..
Each player would have signed a 10 million dollar
"variable pay" or "performance based pay" and will end
up making less than ten thousand.
The players will get lowest in performance appraisals
because the defender did not score goals and the
striker did not defend. Thus making the pay even
lower.

So far so good.. just the mission statement and value
systems is missin..

Oooff.. enough of it.. Now i know i was wrong.. Sports
club is more of passion and tradition and cannot be
managed like a company where processes are more
important than people.
